Biomass
Any organic material that can convert to energy. You can convert biomass by burning it. Biomass can be converted to methane and ethanol. Biomass could someday become an important source of energy. Biomass will never run out because it’s a renewable. Biomass can be used to make fuels in a renewable way. Sometimes when biomass is burned in a waste—treatment plant it can be used as fuel. Plants are the most important energy source. When it’s burned it can make fuel. Biomass is the name of all organisms on Earth and their waste. Biomass energy includes Grass, trees, and other plants. Biomass stores solar energy from the sun. When biomass is called bioenergy it’s used for heating, lighting, cooking, or running cars. Fossils fuels is the most commonly used fuel. It’s hurting the environment. Biomass doesn’t. Plants(a biomass)store their energy by photosynthesis. Burning biomass is the easiest way of releasing energy. People all around the world burn wood (a biomass) for heat and cooking. Biomass around the world is burned for electricity is called biopower. Burning biomass is the most common way of using biomass for years. Burning only biomass is called Direct-fired. Direct-fired plants burn briguettes. Briguettes are made from sawdust, grain husks, and nutshells that are tightly packed together. When caol is mixed with biomass it's called co-firning. When coal is burned with biomass less nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide is releast into the air. Waste-to-energy plants burn waste for electricity. People think this is a good way to reduce waste. When garbage is burned harmful ashes are releast. So we have to put them in landfills. When biomass is burned in powerplants it's called CHP's.Sawmills, papermills, and other factories sometimes have CHP's. CHP's burn sawdust and woodchips. CHP's help save money from dumping the watse in landfills. When biomass is breaks down and turns into gasses it's called biogas. It contians methane, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen gasses. Biomass changes into biogas by a prosses called gasification. It's used for heating, cooking, and producing electricity. Biodigesters are used to breake down biomass andand collect the gasses it releases. Sewage and manure are poured into a container and mixed until it forms sulrry. It is poured into the biodigester (a tank or pit) to rot. Then when it is done roting it is used to fertilize crops.Biomass fuels provide about 4% of the energy in the U.S. Wood is 2% of the energy we use today. 14% of the trash we us is burned. Americans throw away more and more trash away each year. In 1960 the av. American through away 2.7 pounds of trash each year. Today the av. Amerian thows away 4.5 pounds of trash. Now each year the av. American throws away 1,600 pounds of trash. The top three states with the most lanfills are California (73), Illinois (36), and Michigan (27).
